"A bold, colourful interior palette and no obstruction of the view from anywhere on the main floor was the directive from these young clients. With fabulous sunset views down Indian Arm in Vancouver, the greatest challenge presented to LP Design in the design of this new contemporary home was how to give the clients an unobstructed view when some structure was required to support the roof! A large steel column needed to be camoflauged so LP Design's solution was to add a 3 sided peninsula gas fireplace on the diagonal so as not to disturb sightlines and to give a view of the fireplace from anywhere in the main living space. The fireplace flue and the column were combined into the same chase for minimal visual impact, and then clad with a subtle Venetian Plaster hand waxed finish. A floating cast concrete hearth surrounds the fireplace and extends to provide additional seating on the living room side. A low anigre wood slab serves as a backrest to the hearth seating, while hiding the TV on the other side facing the casual sitting area.
A large entertaining kitchen works well for catered parties and the bold red Venetian plastered walls in the open living and dining areas becomes the art itself for those spaces, as well as a dramatic backdrop for the client's grand piano and antique tribal console table. The grand piano was also the inspiration for the curved shape of the dropped ceiling detail, high tech light rails, and the fireplace hearth." |
